  • 3 February: WikiCheese at Modercai-Richler Library in Montreal, Quebec. The goal of this event was to photograph recognized cheeses from Quebec and create or improve the Wikipedia articles about them. The event had representatives from Wikimedia Canada, an expert from the Épicerie Latina, a librairian and 14 participants. The activity went in three phases: first a presentation about Wikipedia was given, second the cheeses "Riopelle-de-l'Isle" and "Sabot de Blanchette" were photographred and tasted, then a workshop to create the Wikipedia page about the Riopelle-de-l'Isle. All feedback from this activity were positive or very positive. It was noted that the presence of an expert was well appreciated. A total of 8 photographs were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
  • 5 February: Wiki Tuesday! at the Grande Bibliothèque of Montreal, Quebec.
  • 9 February: Women in STEM Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in Ottawa, Ontario. In celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, an edit-a-thon has been hosted at the Canada Science and Technology Museum Ingenium in Ottawa, Ontario with the goal to bridge the digital gender gap in STEM. A crash course has been provided on how to edit Wikipedia. Then the participants edited Wikipedia. See the dashboard. Stats: 21 editors, 152 edits, 20 articles edited, 4 articles created.

  • 1-31 March: International Francophone Contribution Month. Once again, in March 2019, Wikimedia Canada, as part of the WikiFranca cooperation, organized the International Francophone Contribution Month where a series of workshops are hosted across the Francophonie with the goal to improve the Wikimedia projects in French. During this 6th edition, 15 countries participated. During the International Francophone Contribution Month, experienced contributors from across the Francophonie are invited to host workshops in their local regions and to invite the public for an initiation to contribution to the French Wikipedia and its sister projects. Workshops can be of various types, can be hosted in different locations and can be about different themes at the choice of the organizer. It can be a training session for citizens, a photographic walk to illustrate articles of the region, transcribing session on Wikisource, etc. In Canada, a total of 12 workshops have been hosted in four different cities in Quebec.
  • 1-31 March: Art+Feminism. During the month of March, a series of workshops have been held across the country to augment and improve the coverage of female and non-binary artists on Wikimedia projects, especially Wikipedia. Workshops has been held in five different provinces in both English and French. A total of 22 workshops have been organized in Canada for the Art+Feminism campaign in 5 different provinces and 15 different cities.

  • 2 April: Wiki Tuesday @ Western in London, Ontario. This is the first "Wiki Tuesday @ Western", an informal gathering of folks who are interested in working collaboratively on Wikimedia projects. This is a drop-in event for wiki editors of all skill levels. This session began with a presentation "The power of Wiki" followed by a workshop "Being a Wiki editor".

  • 25 April: Introductory Wikipedia Workshop at the Plateau-Mont-Royal Library in Montreal, Quebec. The workshop was a success. The participants were almost all retired and super motivated in becoming contributors. The organizer regrets that she had only two hours. She felt that the participants would have liked to have two more to really put their learning into practice.
  • 27 April: Wiki Workshop at Gabrielle-Roy Library in Quebec City, Quebec.
  • 27 April: Wiki Workshop at Festin de livres de l'Outaouais in Saint-André-Avelin, Quebec. A volunteer from Wikimedia Canada gave a presentation on Wikimedia projects to the participants of the Festin de livres, a book fair in Saint-André-Avelin, Quebec.

  • 7 May: Wiki Tuesday! at the Grande Bibliothèque of Montreal, Quebec.
  • 7 May: Wiki Tuesday @ Western in London, Ontario. This session began with a presentation given by Denise Smith, Health Sciences Librarian at McMaster University: "Leveraging student research to improve health content on Wikipedia". She discussed the first offering of a third year undergraduate course in health sciences that focused on the production and dissemination of health information for consumers. Wikipedia was used as a tool by which students practiced summarizing complex health issues through an interdisciplinary lens. This talk discussed the outcomes of this course. The presentation was followed by free editing time, mainly to add references to health-related articles on Wikipedia.
  • 13 May: Agreement with Library and Archives Canada. During a GLAM Summit hosted in Montreal, Quebec, Library and Archives Canada and Wikimedia Canada signed an over-arching agreement to work together in making the country's documentary heritage more accessible to Canadians and people around the world. This agreement sets the framework for future projects and the organization of events such as edit-a-thons and scan-a-thons. As well, both institutions have agreed to share their expertise and collaborate on research.
  • 16 May: Wikipedia Workshop on the 50th anniversary of the Rioux Report at UQAM in Montreal, Quebec. This activity was organized jointly by the librairies of UQAM and BAnQ and was part of the colloque Arts, sociétés et partage des savoirs celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Rioux Report. During the first part of the event, a volunteer gave a training about Wikipedia followed by a music librairian of UQAM who gave a presentation on useful resources to write articles on Wikipedia. The second part of the event was dedicated to improve Wikipedia articles.

  • 2 July: Wiki Tuesday @ Western in London, Ontario. This session began with a workshop on adding maps to Wikimedia Commons and integrating them on Wikidata. Matt Barry gave a presentation to address the question "why should we care about Wikidata in the Commons?". This was followed by a short lesson on how to integrate Wikidata into uploaded images of maps, and hands-on help adding Western Libraries' London Historic Maps Collection to Wikimedia Commons. See the presentation slides: "Adding map metadata to Wikidata". The presentation was followed by free editing time focusing on adding the London Historic Maps Collection and its corresponding metadata to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata, using the skills developed in the workshop. This collection have its own gallery on Wikimedia Commons that links to the collection on Scolarship@Western. All maps are also listed in the Wikimedia Commons category, Maps of London, Ontario.

  • 4 August: Wiknic meetup in Vancouver, British Columbia. A Wiknic organized in Queen Elizabeth Park.
  • 6 August: Wiki Tuesday @ Western in London, Ontario. This was a discussion session on Indigenous places names on Wikipedia, language revitalization and data sovereignty. Working in partnership with Cortney Dakin (Sâkihitowin Awâsis), a PhD student in geography, we prepared ourselves to add places names in Wikidata in local Indigenous languages along with their English translations to the infoboxes in Wikipedia articles about local waterways. This meetup began with an introduction to the Indigenous Places Names Project and to the concept of data sovereignty in relation to Indigenous peoples in Canada. While we work to collect Indigenous place names for waterways within London and surrounding area, we engaged in a discussion about this project in relation to data sovereignty, reflecting the question: "should this information be made openly available?" Thoughts about this project in relation to data sovereignty can be shared digitally in this document. To learn more about the project, please read the "Read Me" instructions of this spreadsheet.   • 6 August: WikiTuesday in Hamilton, Ontario. An introduction to Wikipedia for McMaster University Libraries.
  • 14 August: Presence of the history of Quebec City and its neighbourhoods in Wikipedia in Quebec City, Quebec. Thanks to a partnership with the Fondation Lionel-Groulx, the Société historique de Québec and Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ), a workshop to improve content on Wikipedia about Quebec City and the history of its neighbourhoods was organized during the second "Rendez-vous d'histoire de Québec". The event lasted all day and was hosted at the Monastère des Augustines.
  • 17 August: BAnQ is proud in Montreal, Quebec. A workshop was organized in partnership with Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) to improve the content on Wikipedia about the diversity sexual and genre community. It was hosted during "Montreal Pride" at the Grande Bibliothèque.
  • 22 August: Ryerson University Library Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in Toronto, Ontario. An edit-a-thon was hosted by Ryerson University Library. This specific event was focusing on creating and improving Wikipedia articles on Indigenous women.

  • 3 September: Wiki Tuesday @ Western in London, Ontario. This session was spent working on two projects: the Indigenous plane names project and the London historic maps collection. The Indigenous place names project aims at adding Indigenous place names for local waterways to Wikipedia and Wikidata. The London historic maps collection project aims at adding the London Historic Maps Collection and corresponding metadata to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.
  • 3 September: Wiki Tuesday at BAnQ in Montreal, Quebec.
  • 6 to 9 September: WikiConvention francophone 2019 in Brussels, Belgium. Nine Canadians participated at the 2019 edition of the WikiConvention francophone, including three participants from the Atikamekw Project.

  • 19 September: Red Carpets Project in Montreal, Quebec. Wikimedia Canada was at the launch of Sommets du cinéma d'animation 2019. Proud partner of the Cinémathèque québécoise and the Sommets, we are always ready to be support the institution in its goal to share the knowledge about the cinema artists and the rich ciname heritage. A Red Carpet was held in order to photograph the animation cinema artists and improve their outreach.
  • 25 September: Wiki Wednesdays at Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in Quebec City, Quebec. Workshop on living heritage and folklore in partnership with the Conseil québécois du patrimoine vivant and with special guest Normand Legault, specialist on Quebec dansing and gigue.

  • 8 December: Wiki workshop on Steven Woloshen at the Cinémathèque québécoise in Montreal, Quebec. As part of the 18th festival Animation Cinema Summits, the Cinémathèque québécoise invited the filmmaker Steven Woloshen to come talk about his practice and movies. The participants were invited to meet him and document his career on Wikimedia projects using documentary resources from the Médiathèque Guy-L.-Côté and the artist himself. See the Outreach Dashboard of this event.
  • 9 December: Wikipedia 101 Training at Concordia: How to read and write Wikipedia articles in Montreal, Quebec. Workshop on how to read and write Wikipedia articles, how to add content to Wikimedia Commons, and how to work with the translation tools on Wikipedia. It also covered ethical questions such as conflict of interest, notability & references and the five pillars of Wikipedia, and focused on feminist and anti-oppressive methodologies for Wikipedia. This workshop included both a theoretical and practical element.
  • 11 December: Wiki Wednesdays at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in Quebec City, Quebec.

Imagine a world where every librarian has added one more reference to a Wikipedia article! '

Following the success of the friendly competition between institutions held last year as part of # 1Lib1Ref, Wikimedia Canada decided to organize a competition again this year. As a reminder, last year 6 institutions had participated in the competition and Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) had finished first, largely thanks to the exemplary work of one of its librarians. Last year's ranking was as follows:

  5. UQAM - University of Quebec in Montreal: 25
  6. Cinémathèque québécoise: 4

Once again, Wikimedia Canada has invited Canadian GLAM institutions (galleries, libraries, archives, museums and universities) to participate in this year's campaign and this year's # 1Bib1Ref / # 1Lib1Ref contest!

From Tuesday, January 15, 2019 to Tuesday, February 5, 2019, the friendly competition has gathered no less than 16 institutions. For this edition, Lela-Kim coordinated communications with the institutions and provided training for several participants. In order to maintain the count of contributions, a dashboard has been set up and Wikimedia Hashtag Search was also used. Unfortunately, no tool really allowed for automated calculation of contributions. It was important to be able to calculate the reference addition to an article and not all the modifications made by a contributor. This tool should be in place for the next edition.

Very quickly, two institutions stood out thanks to the participation of two new contributors to Wikipedia. Laval University and the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec (MNBAQ) quickly took the lead. The majority of participating institutions organized training and contribution sessions.

Here are the final results of this small friendly competition. Next year, we hope that more institutions (especially institutions outside Quebec) will participate.

Indigenous peoples on Wikimedia projects[edit]

Indigenous Knowledges Wikimedia Workshop in Toronto, Ontario
  • 24-25 January: Wikidata training for the Wikipetcia Atikamekw Nehiromowin's administrators in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. A volunteer from Wikimedia Canada went to give a two-day training session to four administrators of the Wikipetcia Atikamekw Nehiromowin. The training took place in Trois-Rivières, Quebec from 9h00 to 17h00 each day. The trainer explained the administrator tools used to "protect" and administrate the Wikipetcia Atikamekw Nehiromowin, to delete, to block, to check the journals, etc., but also tips and tricks to facilitate the work of the sysops. The group had several questions about the creation of an Atikamekw Wiktionary and the use of Wikidata for databoxes and how to link the Atikamekw articles with the other languages. During the afternoon of the second day, approximately 300 stubs of articles and 500 words have been created and recorded in the Atikamekw encyclopedia and in Lingua Libre. Stats: ~300 new articles in Atikamekw and ~500 words recorded in Atikamekw (Lingua Libre).
  • 28-29 January: Indigenous Knowledges Wikimedia Workshop in Toronto, Ontario. A two-day workshops on working with indigenous knowledge and language was held at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario. This event brought together participants from libraries, archives, cultural, heritage and community members to talk about this important area. Participants heard about the work of the Atikamekw knowledge, culture and language in Wikimedia projects, presented by Benoit Rochon from Wikimedia Canada. A workshop on indigenous knowledge and UNDRIP Implementation with Dr Greg Younging and Camille Callison was included as part of the event. The meeting was scheduled to coincide with the Ontario Library Association Superconference, the largest library conference in Canada, as well as the first meeting of the National Indigenous Knowledge and Language Alliance/Alliance nationale des connaissances et langues autochtones (NIKLA-ANCLA).   • 1 February-31 March: Nanto masinatcikan in Manawan, Quebec. During the months of February and March, the Atikamekw Community of Manawan WikiClub organized an activity called Nanto masinatcikan. The goal of this activity is to scan archival pictures from the different families and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. Every Tuesdays, the Wiki Ciwakamihikan served as workshops at the Otapi Highschool where the public was invited to scan their pictures and the participants were taught how to upload them to Wikimedia Commons.

Day 7 of Tapiskwan Sipi Expedition 2019: Kotowakanik Camp
  • 29 July to 9 August: Tapiskwan Sipi Expedition in Nitaskinan. The Tapiskwan Sipi Expedition is a traditional activity of the Atikamekw conducted every year. During the 12 days of the expedition, a volunteer from Wikimedia Canada took part in order to document this ancestral expedition. Beside all the pictures and videos uploaded, Wikipedia articles in French, English and Atikamekw were created and there is a project to add and translate subtitles to the videos. This also allowed Wikimedia Canada to contact all three communities of the Atikamekw and talk about a possible coordinator for the Wikipetcia Atikamekw Nehiromowin Project.   • 13 August: Wikipedia Edit-a-thon on Indigenous speakers in Toronto, Ontario. As part of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, a Wikipedia edit-a-thon was organized by the University of Toronto Libraries. It was focusing on Indigenous speakers from the University of Toronto, Toronto and Ontario.
  • 27 August: WikiClub Metapeckeka Meeting in Manawan, Quebec. The WikiClub Metapeckeka (formerly Manawan WikiClub) had an official meeting to discuss the affairs of the WikiClub and the future of the project to develop the Wikipetcia Atikamekw Nehiromowin. There were representatives from the WikiClub, Manawan Council (including the Vice Chief), the Manawan schools, the Manawan Education Services and Wikimedia Canada. It has been decided to host monthly meetups called "Wiki Ciwakaminikan" on the last Monday of every month. The name of the WikiClub has been changed to WikiClub Metapeckeka which is the ancestral name of Manawan.
