Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photographic competition to promote historic sites around the World, through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons). Everybody can participate. There are a lot of historic monuments in all participating countries. The goal of Wiki Loves Monuments is to encourage people to take pictures of those monuments and to put them under a free license to allow others to access them through Internet. To achieve that, an international contest will take place in September 2012. This website presents the Canadian part of this competition. Background[edit]The contest began in the Netherlands in 2010 and expanded throughout Europe in 2011. This year, the contest takes place in several countries around the world (see the map). The goal is to put online as many pictures of national monuments and historic sites of Canada during the month of September 2012, to share this heritage, for free, with the world. The list of monuments is available on this website. All pictures will be donated to Wikimedia Commons under a free license, so they can be used freely around the world. Wikimedia Commons is an online repository hosting free multimedia content. Wikipedia relies solely on Commons as its media repository. In September, you can upload as many picture as you want of monuments that you have visited. Pictures don't have to be taken in September, but must be uploaded that month to be considered. Commencing on October 1, the contest jury will begin evaluating the photographs, awarding prizes for the best pictures in Canada and ultimately in the world. During Wiki Loves Monuments 2011, 165,000 pictures of European historic monuments have been uploaded by more than 5,000 photographs. See 2011's Winners. |
