Requested todos[edit]

Hi Antaya,

I have implemented two of your todo list requests:

  • Unlock main page
  • Parserfunctions

I have not implemented:

  • Images of any kind. It seems the interwiki linking of images is not as straight forward as I had hoped. It seems additional PHP/JSON modules are required, a change I am not willing to make at this time. We are trying to keep this Wiki as simple and stable as possible at this stage. As things progress and money is raised we can consider a hosting option that is more flexible and robust.
  • Correct the SEO in order to manage URLs like "../index.php/..". I have not made this change yet as it has implications with our Interwiki link from Meta. I recognize it is less than desirable for our Google rankings and the mod_rewrite URLs do have a much more aesthetic appearance. However, this type of change would be best made as part of a larger change in the future.

Thank again for your suggestions and feedback. Alan.ca 13:29, 13 February 2011 (MST)

Hello Alan, first thank you for your warm welcome! I'm really happy that finally Wikimedia Canada exists. I didn't really followed the development of WM.ca in recent months, because I'm a webmaster and I had several contracts lately, so no much time for Wikis!
By the way, I read on my talk page that you are looking for a better host? My brother and I have servers in Montreal for twelve years, and we would be delighted to host Wikimedia Canada for free. That would be my way of contributing as members! Let me know what you think. Antaya 14:58, 15 February 2011 (MST)

Sidebar[edit]

Hi, Antaya! I'm glad to see that you found your way to our new website. I translated the sidebar links (on the left side of the page) into French for anyone who has the preferences set to a French interface. Let me know if I made a mistake in the translation. There is an extension that would make the sidebar links appear in French for anonymous visitors who are looking at a French page, and also put the language link in the sidebar. However, as Alan said, we might not want to add too many extensions right away. --Jeffery Nichols (Arctic.gnome) (talk) 17:29, 14 February 2011 (MST)

Salut Jeffrey! Nice to "see" you again. Yes I was able to find my way here, and sorry for being silent for a while, I was in a little rush for my own websites! There's no mistakes at all, your French is good! >See you later. Antaya 15:44, 15 February 2011 (MST)

Template:Lang[edit]

Cordialement. Antaya 22:24, 26 February 2011 (MST)
I put the link in the upper right corner because under the title it often entered into conflict with other system messages and the breadcrumbs. Anyway, generally on other websites, the change of languages are in the right corner of page... Francophones are accustomed to look there! And eventually, we will install an extension for MultiLanguageManager. Thanks! Antaya (talk) 14:28, 28 February 2011 (EST)
I didn't know that the upper right was the normal place for language links outside of mediawikis, sorry. I have used MultiLanguageManager before and it works well; I look forward to the sidbar links working in French. Jeffery Nichols (Arctic.gnome) (talk) 15:57, 1 March 2011 (EST)

Assorted ideas[edit]

It's good to see you active in improving this site. I hope the best for it. You've been around almost as long as I; that's evidence of some degree of patience. I still have reservations about the way it happened, but I also have to concede that unless someone acted boldly nothing was going to get done. I hope that Alan acts soon to give you the admin bit; I think he has been away travelling in the last couple of weeks. I'm still a resident luddite who finds most of what happens in the templates completely incomprehensible.

I also look forward to an expansion of the Board of Directors. We're at a time when a lot of key decisions and policies need to be developed by active directors. Zana hasn't even seen fit to get on the Wiki.

I saw your comments about offering to host this website. In the short term I am happy with leaving the site where it is. I don't think that this site will be a high traffic site. I expect that it will play a role for Wikimedia Canada comparable to the role that Meta plays for the WMF. Alan may have some thoughts on this. We will still need to develop other sites to host substantive content. That's where we will need a more serious consideration of hosting capacities; once programmes are functioning and funding is more clear I'm certain that the needs will far exceed what is reasonably available through free hosting. Copyright issues are not a problem for the operation of this site, but they could become so for the other ones. Since we would want our content to be covered by Canadian law, all servers must also be in Canada. I would be very concerned about a retail ISP in Canada whose service is really through a US wholesaler.

Wikilivres is currently run by Yann Forget, a French citizen currently living in India where his wife is from. It started on a server in France, but it now on a Canadian server to take advantage of the shorter copyright term available in Canada. He has expressed desire in the past that he would like to be dealing with a different ISP. This may have something to do with the costs which I understand to be in the %90 monthly range; I suspect that the financial help from others has been very limited. Is there a better way of handling this? I can foresee someday folding this into Wikimedia Canada's operation but not until we have a functioning charitable organization. Formating[edit]

You have done an excellent job with the graphic layout on the meeting page [1]. I have seperated out the past meetings. Wondering if you could format that section similarly to the one above? Thanks --Doc James 23:51, 28 February 2011 (EST)

Done! Antaya (talk) 14:54, 1 March 2011 (EST)
And by the way Welcome aboard.--Doc James 14:34, 2 March 2011 (EST)
Thanks, I'm sooo glad to be here, you can't imagine how! Antaya (talk) 15:16, 2 March 2011 (EST)

--Jeffery Nichols (Arctic.gnome) (talk) 23:39, 3 March 2011 (EST)

I also think that the main page should be something that people want to visit often, like Wikipedia's main page, so I moved a lot of the overview information to a new About us page. --Jeffery Nichols (Arctic.gnome) (talk) 00:11, 4 March 2011 (EST)
Your edit on {{menu}} worked; thanks! I'm thinking of getting rid of the sidebar except for "toolbox" and "this wiki" because your menu looks better, it works better, and I think it looks silly to have the same links twice on every page. We just have to make sure the template goes on every page from now on. --Jeffery Nichols (Arctic.gnome) (talk) 17:10, 5 March 2011 (EST)
Update: If the sidebar starts working right, I don't know which we should keep. Jeffery Nichols (Arctic.gnome) (talk) 17:13, 5 March 2011 (EST)

I like the new layout. --Doc James 10:26, 6 March 2011 (EST)

The timezone template is cool. I see that you tried to make Saskatchewan work differently, but I think that you don't have it quite right yet. It should match Manitoba in the winter and match Alberta in the summer, but when I experiment with it, it always matches Alberta. Jeffery Nichols (Arctic.gnome) (talk) 13:49, 6 March 2011 (EST)
Thanks guys! This {{timezones}} gave me an headache, I work on this all night! It's not perfect yet because there's no center command in MediaWiki software to manage time offsets! I had to create my own command, and it can vary from a year to another. Example : IF MeetingDate is > than Week-11 but < than Week-46 = Daylight - SaskatchewanDiff = HugeBunchOfMistakes!!! Anyway I'm pretty proud of it! I'll fix my baby progressively, when mistakes comes up. Thanks again for your encouragement. Antaya (talk) 14:14, 6 March 2011 (EST)
Couldn't you just add a parameter called "daylight-savings=yes" rather than trying to teach it when the dates are? Jeffery Nichols (Arctic.gnome) (talk) 15:50, 6 March 2011 (EST)
Yes that would the easiest way! But why make simple when it can be complicated? :P hehe... If I can't make it proprely, I'll add a param; but what I would like is to make it as automatic as possible. We'll see if I can fix it. Antaya (talk) 15:54, 6 March 2011 (EST)
I think I fixed the Saskatchewan's time offsets. When you have a second, can you make a couple tests to see if this is what you meant? Thank you. Antaya (talk) 19:20, 6 March 2011 (EST)

Spam[edit]

The recent spam linking all seems to have a structural sameness. Can you tell if it's all coming from the same IP or IP range? Eclecticology 14:46, 14 March 2011 (EDT)

Is it possible to patch into Wikipedia's spam blocking mechanisms? Ie there black lists and there lists of previously blocked IPs? Also is there a way to figure out the IP all these users come from and block that range? --Doc James 02:01, 15 March 2011 (EDT)
Our spammers are at it again. It looks like today's installation did nothing. Would it help to use Captchas for new account creation? Eclecticology 23:56, 15 March 2011 (EDT)

Meeting[edit]

While the layout looks great they are a little hard to edit and follow. Do to technical issues not everyone is going to be able to attend the first AGM as stated and only paid confirmed members. After this meeting other will be able to listen in once we secure a better teleconference technique. Can you update our page to reflect this? Thanks --Doc James 18:18, 15 March 2011 (EDT)

New main page[edit]

I assume that the new main page is your doing? I think it is excellent. Good to have both languages properly represented as equals. --Doc James 23:22, 17 March 2011 (EDT)

Actually, it is both our doing!!!! Alan.ca 00:02, 18 March 2011 (EDT)
Excellent well done to both of you. --Doc James 00:35, 18 March 2011 (EDT)

Google Custom Search[edit]

Hi Benoit, I set up Google Custom Search test. It's $100 per year without ads, this demo has ads. Let me know what you think, we could integrate it to replace the media wiki search.Alan.ca 13:21, 18 March 2011 (EDT)

Project pages[edit]

I've been revising the English text on the various project pages. Let me know if these don't say what you wanted to say. WTF does the BANQ mean by "démocratisation d'access". Literally it means having the people decide the rules of access, but I can't imagine that they really mean that. I'm also careful about wording that would suggest that anything we write on this or any future site we control would fall under anything but Canadian law. I've made the links to the article in the other language bigger and bolder; it might be better included in the template. Thee are important links that should be more prominent and visible. Eclecticology 06:31, 19 March 2011 (EDT)

I don't know if those flags are an improvement. The British flag suggests the POV that we're a lot of raving royalists. Eclecticology 15:06, 19 March 2011 (EDT)

Thanks...[edit]

Project discussion[edit]

Wondering if it would be best to have a single discussion page for each potential project and people can just use which ever language they feel most comfortable with? On google they have these little translate tags. Would it be possible to add these for people who have difficulty understanding which ever language? --Doc James 00:16, 22 March 2011 (EDT)

I'm sure that I know what you mean with "translate tags". Antaya 10:46, 22 March 2011 (EDT)

Projects[edit]

--Doc James 07:40, 2 April 2011 (EDT) We are not waiting to become an official chapter before launching projects. I am currently working on a research project. Thus I returned it to they way it was. Lets discuss this on the talk page further [2] . --Doc James 07:24, 2 April 2011 (EDT)

University clubs[edit]

It appears that two different things are being discussed here. The links are to faculty clubs. What we wish to encourage is the creation of student Wikipedia clubs such as was created at McGill. Thus I have clarified this and removed some of the links Projects/University_clubs.

Glam[edit]

Bonjour,

namespaces vs. subpages[edit]

Hey. I noticed that the namespace "Meeting" has been created, but it is not being used right now, and I was wondering what the plan was for that. I think that we should switch the wiki from using subpages to namespaces for meetings pages and policy pages. With namespaces, we can easily view everything in a namespace on pages like Special:Recent changes or Special:New pages. We can also give each namespace its own header or edit warning. --Jeffery Nichols (Arctic.gnome) (talk) 19:45, 9 April 2011 (EDT)

Museum photos[edit]

This is a great project. It's just the kind of thing we should be promoting. Too bad I'm not in Montreal to take advantage. Eclecticology 18:56, 17 April 2011 (EDT)

Cordialement, Antaya 09:49, 29 July 2011 (EDT)

Participant subpages.[edit]

Do we really need subpages for listing the participants at Board meetings? These lists are and will always be small, hardly enough for separate pages. It would be just as easy to sign in on the meeting page itself. Eclecticology 01:30, 28 October 2011 (EDT)

Grant[edit]

Hello Benoit. I was not certain if the Programs Committee is automatically informed of new grant requests or not, so out of an abundance of caution, I am letting you know I have filed: Grants/Requests/2018/Winnipeg Edit-A-Thon - Winnipeg Public Library. Please kindly let the Programs Committee know or disregard if they are automatically informed. Regards, Mkdw (talk) 22:08, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mkdw, I take care of informing the Programs Committee of new grant request. They will review yours shortly. Thank you very much! JP Béland (WMCA) (talk) 11:32, 18 September 2018 (UTC) P.S. Benoit, I hope you don't mind me answering on your talk page.[reply]
Thank you JP Béland (WMCA). Mkdw (talk) 17:07, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Benoit. Thank you so much for pre-approving my grant request. In reading the reimbursement process, I realize some steps may have been missed. The Google Sheet form was not sent to me and I did not complete it in advance of my expenses. Would it be possible to send the form and I will complete it as soon as possible? Thank you, Mkdw (talk) 19:16, 10 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good day Mkdw, the new process on the wiki is replacing the old process on Google Sheets so it is easier and more transparent. The Board just approved a new revised policy at their last meeting to reflect those changes and it will be updated on this page before the end of this week. You have done everything correctly so far. Please send me your receipts by email at jpbeland@wikimedia.ca. We will not be able to issue a reimbursement until the event is completed, because we require the "activity report" section to be filled. Please let us know if this is a problem for you. Thank you, JP Béland (WMCA) (talk) 13:11, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you JP Béland (WMCA). I will send you the receipts shortly. I understand the conditions of the Reimbursement Policy process and will file an activity report within 90 days of the completion of the event to be eligible for full reimbursement. Mkdw (talk) 15:23, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Mkdw, I confirm that I received your receipts. I wish you good luck for your event and I am looking forward to read your activity report. I have just published the revised Reimbursement Policy. Thank you again, JP Béland (WMCA) (talk) 16:18, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Need your input on a policy impacting gadgets and UserJS[edit]

Dear interface administrator,

This is Samuel from the Security team and I hope my message finds you well.

There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed policy governing the use of external resources in gadgets and UserJS. The proposed Third-party resources policy aims at making the UserJS and Gadgets landscape a bit safer by encouraging best practices around external resources. After an initial non-public conversation with a small number of interface admins and staff, we've launched a much larger, public consultation to get a wider pool of feedback for improving the policy proposal. Based on the ideas received so far, the proposed policy now includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, best practices for gadgets and UserJS developers, and exemptions requirements such as code transparency and inspectability.

As an interface administrator, your feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome until July 17, 2023 on the policy talk page.

Have a great day!
