Hi Alan, I am planning on a [Wikipedia 15] event in Winnipeg. Is wikimedia.ca still alive, and do you have any members here who might be interested in eating some cake with other wikipedians at skullspace? Please let me know if you would like more info. Tenbergen (talk) 04:45, 22 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I sent you an email with updated contact info for the meeting, but I figured that I should send you a notice here in case you don't check that accout before the meeting. –Jeffery Nichols 16:56, 9 February 2011 (MST)

Thanks Jeff, unfortunately I was unable to reach you for the conference call. Alan.ca 18:44, 9 February 2011 (MST)

I noticed that you were trying to add #if statements to templates. In case you aren't familiar with it, the extension needed to include #if statements is http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ParserFunctions. Also, to use the <table class> markup I think we'd have to add some code to MediaWiki:Common.css, but it might be easier to make our own tables rather than mess with MediaWiki pages unless you understand how to code that well. I think we might need a page dedicated to discussions about the site itself. –Jeffery Nichols 22:19, 9 February 2011 (MST)

One other thing. I was thinking that rather than writing our userpages like people do on Wikipedia (where they usually start with "I am" or "This is the page of"), we should copy the format of corporate sites and just include a one-paragraph professional biography written in the third-person (plus a link to wikipedia profiles or other profiles if we want). –Jeffery Nichols 22:38, 9 February 2011 (MST)

Regarding Vandalism control, as you mentioned.. for now I dont think it would be an issue however we could probably have a few people monitor it. For example, when I am doing my regular EN-WP vandalism checks I can also monitor this one. If it becomes a big issue we could try to figure something more permanent? Or would it be better to get the planning done now.. not too sure. Enti342 20:47, 10 February 2011 (MST)

Hi Alan, hope you are doing fine! I'm working WM.ca's translations but I can't link Main Page to Accueil using {{Menu}} because the main page, which talks about open source, free use and free content is currently... locked!!! Witch I find pretty ironic! Would it be possible to unlock it please? Thanks in advance, Antaya 07:51, 13 February 2011 (MST)

Antaya, thank you for your contributions to Wiki Canada. I am excited to learn that you will be helping us with our French language communications. I have removed the protection from the main page to enable you to make your modifications. However, we prefer to keep that page protected as we do not want it modified, thus cannot see the benefit of having it modifiable. Alan.ca 12:17, 13 February 2011 (MST)

Hello Alan, first thank you for your warm welcome! I'm really happy that finally Wikimedia Canada exists. I didn't really followed the development of WM.ca in recent months, because I'm a webmaster and I had several contracts lately, so no much time for Wikis!

By the way, I read on my talk page that you are looking for a better host? My brother and I have servers in Montreal for twelve years, and we would be delighted to host Wikimedia Canada for free. That would be my way of contributing as members! Let me know what you think. Antaya 14:58, 15 February 2011 (MST)

That's excellent news Antaya, this is definitely something we could discuss as part of the business plan. I encourage you and your brother to Join Wiki Canada and become members. Be sure to put your current contact information on your membership application and we will do our best to have someone contact you. Alan.ca 06:37, 18 February 2011 (MST)
Great! I'm glad to ear that. Now, one more thing... would it be possible for me to have a little bit of admin rights, at least to edit protect pages. Because right now, it coming difficult for me to act as a simple user when I want to push things a little farther! Thank in advance, Antaya 19:21, 24 February 2011 (MST)
Congratulations on becoming a member! I appreciate your efforts here Antaya, the French language is starting to make its presence known. I like how you did the Francais link on the main page. What is the reason you require adminship at this stage? I know Jeffrey is quite eager to work with you on improving the Wiki. I am looking forward to our phone conversation and getting to know you better. Alan.ca 03:21, 25 February 2011 (MST)
I am very happy to finally be a member! It's been years that I waited this moment ... I want to donate to Wikimedia, but I do not want my money go to the economy of the United States or France! I am Canadian!
Thank you for congratulating me for my work as a translator, I take this very seriously. I just created a project page for future translators, because Wikimedia Canada will be announced in the newsletter of March on WP-fr. So I want Francophones can be warmly welcomed and ready to work if needed.
Otherwise, the reason why I want few rights on this wiki is because I feel "handcuffed" when I want to make changes that require rights. For example, change the template {{policy yellow}} to {{Policy}} in protected pages (like Sidebars), delete pages I created by mistake, etc.. I do not necessarily require administrative rights, but at least editorial rights. Don't worry, I know the Mediawiki software because I installed it for the next update of my personnal website : LePouceux.com.
Anyway, thank you for letting me the flexibility to make this site great! I also look forward to a phone conversation and get to know you better. Cheers, Antaya 14:55, 26 February 2011 (MST)
Antaya, your enthusiasm is a pleasure to read about. However, please do not make an any announcements about Wikimedia Canada at this time. We are still waiting on the chapters committee and the WMF Board to finalize the official agreement. We believe we should have that in place before we make an announcement on Wikipedia. Alan.ca 06:22, 27 February 2011 (MST)
Thank you for the compliments, it makes me very happy! Okay for the announcement on WP-fr, it was indeed premature ... I was a little TOO enthusiast! Antaya (talk) 10:08, 27 February 2011 (MST)

Hey there! Can you add this on pls and if you have time a a BreadCrumbs like Wikpedia?Antaya (talk) 22:32, 27 February 2011 (EST)

Both done. However, the first item it said it should have been on by default and the config file did not have a setting for it. I have set it to true explicitly now, but you will need to verify this is working. Alan.ca 01:23, 28 February 2011 (EST)
Actually, I made a mistake, it's not the right extention at all. As I mentionned in the To-do list, would you uninstall the breadcrumbs extention, and enable the sub-pages function in the main namespace.
Also, if you have few minutes more, I think there's a better way to use WM-Commons files : $wgUseInstantCommons.
Thank you. Antaya (talk) 10:59, 2 March 2011 (EST)
Done. Alan.ca 21:29, 2 March 2011 (EST)

Anti-spam[edit]

First, read mw:Extension:ConfirmEdit#QuestyCaptcha, and use it. There are bots which can answer your mathcaptcha. I would modify your settings to allow logged-in users to edit without the captcha *after* you add the following:

  • mw:Extension:TitleBlacklist allows use of regular expressions to prevent page or username creation. So, for example, you could use prevent the creation of usernames ending in "Wheels", ala Willy on Wheels, using
    [Ww]heels$
  • mw:Extension:AntiBot is specifically designed to confound spam bots. I do not understand this script, one of the only ones I don't, but I trust Tim.

Thank you, I hope to review these plug-ins when we return from Berlin. Alan.ca 03:57, 18 March 2011 (EDT)

Language selector[edit]

Bonjour Alan, I hope you did a great flight to Germany and catch up the jet lag! I have a little request, to complete what we did last night and have the left side menu fully functionnal.

  1. Open the file localsetting.php
  2. search for $wgForceUIMsgAsContentMsg
  3. add the elements :
    'Discussion-url', 'Lang-url'

There's no rush at all, do it only when you have few seconds. After this chage the left side menu will be fully functional. Thank you in advance, and I cross my fingers for that conference. Antaya 20:47, 18 March 2011 (EDT)

Done Alan.ca 07:09, 19 March 2011 (EDT)

Hello, I thought the score of members were not sufficient for the Berlin conference, so I spent the day checking all potential volunteers for Wikimedia Canada. I removed all the volunteers banned / doubles in the last five years and the list is now updated. Feel free to use it during the conference. Antaya 00:28, 21 March 2011 (EDT)

Signatures[edit]

You have missed a few :-) --Doc James 04:48, 27 March 2011 (EDT)

Signatures for which? Alan.ca 08:04, 27 March 2011 (EDT)
James, no signature in pages (except talk pages). For instance, Projects/Creative Commons is not a talk page; it would be Talk:Projects/Creative Commons. I don't know if it was you meant, but I saw few times people having a discussion in main pages... In those I'm trying to have a green box on the top page, explainning what's the project are about; for example Projects/BAnQ. Thank you. Guys gimme news when you'll be back in Canada. Antaya 15:05, 27 March 2011 (EDT)

Can you join the discussion here...[edit]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
