Michael David MILLER

[edit]

Introduction

Greetings to all, my name is Michael David MILLER. Of Korean origin, born in Michigan, and an immigrant to Québec, I seek a mandate within the board of directors of Wikimedia Canada to support the Executive Director and the salaried team in implementing the Strategic Transformation Plan, to which I have contributed to its development.

Professional Information

I hold a position as an associate librarian at the McGill University Libraries, where I serve as a liaison librarian for French language literatures, economics, Québec studies, and gender studies. In terms of my higher education, I earned a Master's degree in Information and Library Sciences from the Université de Montréal in 2013. Additionally, I also hold two Bachelor of Arts degrees from Michigan State University, both obtained in 2011, the first in Francophone studies and the second in advertising studies. My professional experience in the field of university libraries spans nearly 18 years, including positions at Michigan State University, the Université de Montréal, and McGill University.

Wikimedia Information

Since 2017, I have been actively involved as a librarian within the Wikimedia Movement, with the goal of contributing to the democratization of access to information, open access, and the knowledge equity. Since 2018, I have held a seat on the board of directors of Wikimedia Canada, where I have served as vice-president since November 2019. I have also served as interim president during the period 2021-2022. I have actively participated in several committees, notably the one that developed the Strategic Transformation Plan and selected the first executive director of Wikimedia Canada. I aspire to run for another term on the board of Wikimedia Canada, where I can bring my diverse experiences in Wikimedia and libraries. I am also a member of the boards of WikiFranca and Acfas, and I have served for many years on the board of the Fédération des milieux documentaires.

Within the Wikimedia Movement, my primary contributions occur in French, followed by English and then Catalan. Given that this multilingual movement shares the missions of libraries and librarians, I believe my profile is well-suited to contribute to the governance and promotion of Wikimedia Canada. Furthermore, I wish to make available my extensive network of professional contacts in the fields of libraries, archives, and museums, so that the employees and administrators of Wikimedia Canada may call upon as needed.
