As you are all aware, COVID-19 is a day-to-day situation and we were informed by the Wikimedia Foundation that all in-person activities funded by them must be cancelled, postponed or moved to virtual events effective immediately and until further notice.
From the Wikimedia Foundation: "Our first priority is the health and safety of you, your Wikimedia community, and the general public health. Global health guidance indicated that the more quickly the world responds to a pandemic, the better off the outcomes. In order to safeguard free knowledge, we must also prioritize the well-being of the people who make it possible."
Wikimedia Canada recognizes the efforts of all the volunteers of the Wikimedia movement in Canada. At this point, Wikimedia Canada is also cancelling or postponing all in-person activities organized or funded by the Chapter until further notice.
We ask all volunteers in Canada to do the same with the activities that they are organizing, and to abide by the directives of their respective provinces regarding health, safety and public events.
Thank you all for your understanding.
If you have any concerns, please communicate with us at infowikimedia.ca.
Wiki Loves Earth
From July 1st to July 31st, 2020, Wikimedia Canada is inviting you to participate in Wiki Loves Earth, an international photographic competition to promote natural sites around the World. Everybody can participate. The goal is to take photographs of recognized protected natural areas in Canada and to upload them on Wikimedia Commons under a free licence, so they can be used freely afterwards to illustre Wikipedia and other projects.
In July, you can upload as many pictures as you want of the recognized natural areas that you have visited. Pictures don't have to be taken in July, but must be uploaded that month to be considered for the contest. Starting in August, the contest's Canadian jury will begin evaluating the photographs to select the 10 best from Canada to be sent to the international jury.
From July 1st to August 31st, 2020, Wikimedia Canada is inviting you to participate in the campaign #WPWPCA (Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos in Canada), a competition aiming at adding pictures to Wikipedia articles. Adding pictures to Wikipedia is a great way to contribute to the free encyclopedia and making the articles better for all readers. Wikimedia Commons has more than 62 millions multimedia files waiting to be used on Wikipedia.
To take part in this campaign, you only need to add at least one picture to a Wikipedia article. When you do so, make sure to include the hashtag used in Canada #WPWPCA in the edit summary. You can add the pictures to any language versions of Wikipedia.
