First meetup[edit]

Ping Loopy30, Rosa Iris, Carlsbad Science (Don Phillipson), Earl Andrew (Earl Washburn), Averagecryptid, Ouvrard,Siolocke (Siobhan Locke)

Good day all, some of who met during a workshop for the National Contribution Month, but now I would like to organize the first meetup of the Ottawa-Gatineau WikiClub. I do not have a location in mind so I am open to suggestions from you, I would recommend a central location though since we have members from both Ottawa and Gatineau, so too far South in Ottawa would make it far for some of us for example. It is an informal meeting, just a meet-and-greet, not a contribution workshop. I can have a small budget from Wikimedia Canada for snacks and beverages (not alcohol) if you would like. So let me know if you would be interested and please suggest some possible locations. Below I invite you to vote for a date in the wiki way by signing your name under the dates that work for you. I will select the dates with the most names this Thursday to organize it, so you have until Wednesday night to vote. Thank you, Amqui (talk) 18:41, 30 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

The chosen date&time is Friday 10th November at 6pm. Now we need to confirm the location below. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 14:35, 2 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Location[edit]

  • Location: Some public library branches offer meeting rooms. Sunnyside (1049 Bank) St might be the most convenient (for either public transport or private parking.) The gas company's Blue Flame Room used also to be available free, but seems too big for us. No personal preference for days/dates, but 6 pm suits me better than 8 pm. -- Don Phillipson
It doesn't have to be in a "library setting". It's not an edit-a-thon. It could be in a pub or a coffee shop or something more convivial like that as well, but I'm open to your suggestions. Amqui (talk) 21:26, 31 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
If the Sunnyside area works well for Don, there's also a Bridgehead Coffee (1172 Bank St, Ottawa) nearby. There are also some Bridgehead locations on Bank St closer to downtown (along with lots of other coffee shops). --Siolocke (talk) 17:27, 1 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
This location works for me. Is there parking in the area? I could give a ride to anybody from the Gatineau side. Amqui (talk) 14:38, 2 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
There is street 1h parking (7am-7pm) on some of the nearby sidestreets (Osington, Belmont). I usually take the bus, so I hope this is helpful! --Siolocke (talk) 15:09, 2 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

I guess that confirms the location: Bridgehead Coffee at 1172 Bank St, Ottawa. Any objections? I will close this discussion tomorrow evening so we can have a firm date and place to plan on. Thank you, Amqui (talk) 20:13, 2 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Location is confirmed: Bridgehead Coffee at 1172 Bank St, Ottawa. At 6 pm. Amqui (talk) 21:16, 6 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Good luck with your efforts[edit]

I don’t believe I know anyone here. I happened to see this meet-up announcement when I checked the revision history of wiki-project ottawa by User: Loopy30, something I rarely do anymore. I truly hope the effort you are making here will revive interest in articles about the Capital and 4th largest City in Canada.

BTW : I know the talk-page of the project looks derelict, but if a message about this meet-up is posted there someone passing by may happen to see it.

I don’t know why, but there seems to be a skewed view of Ottawa on wikipedia. I can't for the life of me locate it now, but a comment I saw by a prominent wiki-Admin a while ago referred to Ottawa as a small insignificant town (or somesuch).

While I was checking wiki-project Ottawa I also looked at the crop of articles currently in the Alerts and Hot Articles sections, and found w:2017 Ottawa Storm (which may be a start to for an w:Ottawa weather article), which is up for deletion with only two editors participating and no one believing it belongs at wikipedia despite having sources with these headlines:

1 Scotti, Monique (October 30, 2017). "Ottawa records rainiest year ever as fresh storm batters capital - National". Global News. Retrieved November 5, 2017.

2 Jump up
^ "Rainstorm batters Ottawa, Gatineau, Que., leaving thousands without power". CBC News. October 30, 2017. Retrieved November 5, 2017.

3 Jump up

Good luck again! Ottawahitech (talk) 12:49, 9 November 2017 (UTC) Please ping meReply

Update?[edit]

How did the Nov 15, 2017 Editathon go? I just found another reference to ottawa as: a small Canadian city. This erroneous perception has to change! Ottawahitech (talk) 23:31, 21 November 2017 (UTC) Please ping me Reply

Ottawahitech, it went well. It wasn't an edit-a-thon but just a meetup to get to know each other. We discussed a lot of different topics. One of the outcomes is that we want to start having some photographic equipment in the National Capital Region to document it for Wikimedia Commons/Wikipedia. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 19:21, 28 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Amqui, Thanks for responding. The reason I thought it was an edit-a-thon was the notice at: Ottawa-Gatineau_WikiClub#Activities. In any event, it is nice to see things are starting to happen in Ottawa. Ottawahitech (talk) 11:59, 29 November 2017 (UTC)Please ping me Reply
Thank you, I hope to meet you at a future event. Amqui (talk) 15:40, 29 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Carleton University?[edit]

@Amqui, Just wondering if anyone approached the people from Carleton U? See: w:Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Carleton University/Topics in Cinema and Gender (Fall 2015) Ottawahitech (talk) 16:39, 14 December 2017 (UTC) Please ping me Reply

@Ottawahitech No, we do not currently have any contact with the Carleton University at Wikimedia Canada. Amqui (talk) 14:06, 15 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Purpose of this club?[edit]

Amqui: I understand that the purpose of the Ottawa-Gatineau WikiClub is to serve as a main point to execute projects and activities of Wikimedia Canada, and that it is the first point of contact between the local public and the Wikimedia movement. Am I correct? Ottawahitech (talk) 15:29, 17 December 2017 (UTC) Please ping me Reply

The main purpose is to serve as a link between the local Wikimedians among themselves and with the cultural and educational institutions of the region, as well as what you said. Its exact purpose can be defined by its own members. I hope it answers your question. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 14:20, 18 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Amqui: I am confused. I thought you were one of the local organizers of the Ottawa editatahons. But from the above message it sounds like you are not. Can you please elaborate? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 16:00, 18 December 2017 (UTC) Please ping meReply
Yes I organized a few edit-a-thons in Ottawa and Gatineau. Amqui (talk) 16:02, 18 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Amqui: You mean there have been more editathons since the first one held on 10 November, 2017? If so why aren't they mentioned on this page?Ottawahitech (talk) 16:55, 21 December 2017 (UTC) Please ping meReply
Because they pre-date this page and the creation of "WikiClubs" in Canada. Amqui (talk) 16:58, 21 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Amqui: Where can interested wikimedians read about the creation of "WikiClubs" in Canada? When and why did it happen? What did Wikimedia Canada do before that? Ottawahitech (talk) 15:08, 22 December 2017 (UTC) Please ping meReply
There isn't much written about the history of the "creation of WikiClubs in Canada". This is my own initiative. I started the idea last June just before Wikimania in Montreal, Qc. To read more about WikiClubs go there WikiClubs. About what we did before that, you can see our past Activity Reports. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 15:17, 22 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
