Grants/Requests/2023/Wiki Wednesdays - Digital Literacy for GLAM

From Wikimedia Canada

Description

[edit]

Describe here the activity including your goal, desired plan and the planned Impact

WikiWednesdays Webinars, Digital Literacy for GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) is co-produced by Victoria Stasiuk, President of Victoria Stasiuk, Arts & Culture Consulting, and Navino Evans, Co-Founder of Histropedia.

Previous to this project request, Victoria and Navino have successfully delivered two other free online webinars funded by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Series 1 - WikiWednesday was funded by a rapid grant from the Wikimedia Foundation.  This project ran from November 2022 to March 2023. Victoria worked with Navino Evans to highlight female visual artists who produced work at the same time as the Group of Seven Landscape Painters. The case studies were based on the work of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection's travelling exhibit entitled Uninvited.

Series 2 - WikiWednesday (Digital Literacy for GLAM) was funded through the General Support Funds of the Wikimedia Foundation and the Canada Council for the Arts, Digital Greenhouse. For Series 2 our project goals were to highlight GLAM themes and discoverability for LGT+ female artists, indigenous artists and newcomers with roots in South Asian culture.

For more information on the case studies, data visualizations, knowledge graphs and content, please go to https://victoriastasiuk.ca/insights-for-creatives-and-culture-workers/glam-galleries-libraries-archives-and-museums/

Goal

The goal of the entire webinar series for GLAM is for Victoria Stasiuk and Navino Evans to provide case examples, data visualizations or knowledge graphs to connect with colleagues in the areas of art galleries, visual artists and heritage museums. Through these visualizations, and dialogues with artists and GLAM workers, the team hopes to raise the profile of Wiki GLAM, Linked Open Data and the opportunities to expand audiences and links to communities.

- Our team is applying to Wikimedia Canada to conduct a mini-series featuring content on Black Canadian artists as well as Black Canadian history connected to the Underground Railroad.

Desired Plan

This project will take place between March 2024 and June 2024. For March and April, the project team will meet with stakeholders, GLAM workers and organizations to examine data gaps in Wikipedia and Wikidata to determine priorities for upcoming projects.

We will deliver two public webinars that will be offered on the first Wednesday of May (Black Artists in Canada - Visual Artists - Amplifying Online Presence with Wikidata and the WikiCommons)

The second public webinar will be offered on the first Wednesday of June (Underground Railroad in Canada)

We are asking the Wikimedia Foundation, Canada Chapter to fund a targeted program pilot program implemented by Rhonda Yearwood for Black Canadian Artists and Black GLAM workers. Her work will receive administrative and technical assistance from Victoria Stasiuk and Navino Evans.

Rhonda would take the lead on peer editing and learning sessions that will be held once a month once funding has been approved.

Rhonda will be using a tool kit we developed in our October 2024 webinar to amplify Black history, culture and visual artists in Canada during these editing sessions. https://victoriastasiuk.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/EmbracingWikidata_ForVisualArtists_Final.pdf

This is a link (https://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/black-life/creation-insists-black-life-1.7036287) to a news article by CBC, outlining how "Black artists have been creating in this country for centuries. Canadian institutions didn't bother to look". Rhonda will also be using the CBC resource "Being Black in Canada" with the above-mentioned tool kit to amplify the online presence of Black Canadians through editing and outreach sessions to GLAM workers in Canada.

We would also like to use the Alvin D. McCurdy fonds posted by the Archives of Ontario as part of their Wiki GLAM project.

Desired Impact

Our preliminary research has discovered that many Canadian Art Galleries are beginning to hold solo exhibits featuring works by Black Canadian artists and starting to acquire works in their collections by these artists.

Our desired impact is to investigate what Black visual artists have been highlighted so far, as well as look up-and-coming artists that may have roots in the Middle Passage or Underground Railroad, as well as artists that have travelled different routes from the Caribbean or Africa.

The second area of research involves the data gap between Underground Railroad locations in Ontario currently identified by Wikipedia and to augment this based on the expertise of Rhonda Yearwood.
