The Canada Student Service Grant will pay student volunteers to "Support Canada’s response to COVID-19" at eligible non-profits. Wikimedia Canada should be eligible. Non-profits are responsible for providing a meaningful opportunity but NOT responsible for administering the grant payment itself. Non-profits like Wikimedia Canada:

  • Submit volunteer opportunities to the Canadian government for review and if the opportunity meets their criteria, the opportunity is posted on the Government of Canada website.
  • "The organization will assign a supervisor who will be able to approve volunteer hours as [they] complete them."
  • "All documentation attesting the total number of volunteer hours must be submitted before November 6th, 2020."
    • email sent July 19 requesting details of the documentation required. Response:
Effective Friday July 3, 2020, the WE Organization will no longer be administering the Canada Student Service Grant. The Government of Canada is working diligently to transition the day to day operations of this program as soon as possible and more information will be available in the coming days.
We have received your request and a ticket has been created. If you are inquiring about an existing application, your application will remain in the cue and more information will be available soon. If you are inquiring about program details and eligibility, please expect a delay in our response.
We appreciate your interest in the Canada Student Service Grant program and thank you for your patience. We will be in touch as soon as possible.

Students themselves:

  • Register with the program
  • Students "have to track [their] hours"
  • Receive the grants directly

Wikimedia Canada can leverage the existing processes & tooling of [WikiEdu https://wikiedu.org/] to train new editors and to track their work. Instead of assigning a mark, we can assign volunteer hours.

Content Writer[edit]

Other information the same as Project Manager position above

  • Opportunity Description (English):
Wikipedia is the world’s foremost source of information, including COVID-19 information. Wikimedia Canada is the local chapter of the non-profit supporting Wikipedia.
Content Writers (aka "editors") will research COVID-19 information relevant to Canada and contribute that information to Wikipedia in support of "Canada’s response to COVID-19". Editors will do so in accordance with Wikipedia's contribution policies including appropriate citation of reliable references. Editors will work in collaboration with student editors part of the Canada Student Service Grant programne and other Wikipedia editors worldwide. Topics include but is not limited to "COVID-19 pandemic in Canada", "Economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada" and "Federal aid during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada". General COVID-19 articles and topics in health and other areas not specific to Canada but nevertheless relevant in support of "Canada’s response to COVID-19" may also be considered. Wikimedia Canada projects go beyond Wikipedia and there may be writing opportunities for sector and location specific content.
Editors do not need any prior experience with Wikipedia nor expertise with COVID-19 related topics; just a willingness to learn. Basic research, writing and fact-checking skills would be helpful. Initially we are limiting the number of formal participants eligible Canada Student Service Grant but anyone can edit Wikipedia and the program may be expanded.
